Youth RISE stands with the youth of Nigeria protesting against the police brutality being inflicted on them by the police, particularly the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS). Youth RISE sends love and support to all the people of Nigeria at this difficult time and calls for an end to the human rights abuses and avoidable loss of lives in the country. Youth RISE has had a strong connection to Nigeria since our inception, with our friends and colleagues at Youth RISE Nigeria being one of the biggest success stories in recent years. As an organization heavily invested in human rights and social justice, we vehemently condemn the unfortunate incident at the Lekki Toll Gate, Lagos, Nigeria on Tuesday, 20 th October, 2020 that led to the ambush and murder of peaceful protesters, which the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet described as “premeditated, planned and coordinated”.

President Muhammadu Buhari recently announced the steps taken by his administration to address the demands of the protesters. However, we urge the government to prioritize the prosecution of erring officers and adopt a non-lethal approach in addressing the growing violence in the country. We call on the Nigerian government to objectively consider the demands of its citizens by employing viable steps in the reformation of the Police Force and ensuring the promotion of social justice, human rights and inclusive socio-economic development.
