Sofía is a drug user and harm reductionist advocate, mostly interested in drug policy reform. She has a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science with a Latin Studies Concentration from Kenyon College, and a Diploma in Drug Policy and Human Rights from Universidad de Buenos Aires. Sofía is currently the Administrative Subdirector of the Frente Amplio Party’s congressional delegation for the 2026-2030 term.
During the previous legislative period, Sofía worked together with civil society organizations on legislative initiatives to introduce proportionality in Costa Rica’s drug laws, regulate medical and adult-use home cultivation of cannabis, and also regulate the possession of drugs for personal use, all to protect the human rights of people who use drugs in the country. She is also a founding member of the Costa Rican Harm Reduction Association.
